Solution of Case YSL Marketing Research
YSL Marketing Research is a small firm conducts focus group meetings and mail opinion surveys. The YSLââ¬â¢s partner Connie Bachmann has been asked to conduct a survey for Surenex that has the potential to be a valued long-run client. And the firm willing to pay YSLââ¬â¢s normally billing rates.2.0 Answer the question (a)The full cost of the Surenex engagement including indirect costs and direct costs. Direct costs consist of travel cost and cost of conducting surveys. In the case, direct cost means direct charge is about $3,000. The professional compensation charges include partner $4,800 and professional staff $4,000. Each of engagement receives an allocation of overhead based on professional compensation charges. The data of estimated total professional compensation and overhead respectively are $1,600,000 and $496,000.ãâ¬â¬ According to OAR= total estimated OH cost/ total estimated professional compensation charges.Overhead calculationEstimated overhead $496,000 Estimate d professional compensation $1,600,000 Overhead rate 0.31 Job cost summary of Surenex engagement $ $ Direct charges 3,000 Professional compensation charges Partner salary(40 hoursÃâ"$120) 4,800 Staff salary(100 hoursÃâ"$40) 4,000 8,800 Overhead(0.31Ãâ"$8,800) 2,728 Full cost 14,528Based on above calculate OAR is about 0.31. The full cost includes profession charges, direct charges and overhead cost. The expected full cost of the Surenex engagement is about $14,528 ($3,000+$8,800+$2,728).3.0 Answer the question (b)Every research company wants to conduct research at higher prices than the cost of research. The company profit equals to the sales revenue minus theà costs. YSL marketing research is a small firm that bidding on a job and is considering various costs. The question requires calculate the lowest prices that Connie can bill on this engagement without hurting company profit means that what is the lowest charge of YSL.From the question (a) the full cost $14,528 is not t he lowest amount that Connie pay and also is not the variable cost of the job. There are three types of costs. The mixed cost is a cost that carries both the elements of the fixed and variable costs such as utilities. Fixed costs usually include rent and lease payments. Variable costs change in relation to a companyââ¬â¢s activities.YSL marketing research is a service company not a manufacture company. From the case it is not clearly told which costs are fixed and which costs are variable. So we assume the variable costs are employeesââ¬â¢ salaries, direct charges and administrative expense. According to Sales ââ¬â VC ââ¬â FC = Profit and calculate the company profit.Based on the fact, we must consider opportunity cost. Opportunity cost means that in order to get some things have to give up the greatest value of some other things. When YSL face Surenex engagement and other jobs, then YSL make decision to undertake one job among these, the highest value of the abandoned option is the opportunity cost of this decision. In this case, on most jobs, YSLââ¬â¢s fee is 1.5 times professional compensation. In addition, the company is reimbursed for all out-of-pocket costs ($3,000). If company undertakes the Surenex job, it will miss out on billing $13,200(1.5 x $8,800) some other job and will have to turn down another potential client. If YSL reject Surenex it can charged 1.5times professional compensation plus out-of-pocket costs of other jobs. In order to avoid hurting profit, the company must cover out of pocket costs ($3,000). Thus, the lowest amount that Connie can bill is $16200 ($13,200+$3,000). The lowest amount that Connie can bill calculationDirect charge 3,000 Partner salary 4,800 Staff salary 4,000 1.5 times professional compensation 8,800 (1.5 x 8,800) 13,200 Total 16,2004.0 Answer the question (c)This question requires we find out some aspects that we did not consider in previous analysis. Surenex is a new high-tech company that may end up being a large hot company with premium billing opportunities in three to five years. To build cooperation relationship with Surenex is good for YSL long-term development, but also the company need to take a certain risks. From the case, we know on the most jobs, the normal rate is 1.5 times of YSLââ¬â¢s fee. But Connie wants to quote a low fee since Surenex has cash-flow problems. In other words, the company may give a discount for example 1.4 times fee or lower charge for Surenex. There are two aspects to analysis. In short-term, YSL may loss profit to undertake this engagement and give up bid 1.5 times compensation on other jobs. And YSL need reject other potential clients that may reduce the goodwill of the company. YSL is in high demand; it may miss some good opportunities. But YSL may be better off in the long-run, even it setting a relatively low price on the current job. If this engagement success, YSL can get a long-term and fixed income from establish cooperation relationsh ip with Surenex. According to the forecast, Surenex may become a big hot company, there are many advantages for the development of YSL, such as improve company visibility. Therefore, even a price that does not cover salaries and direct charges could be warranted if the prospect for future profit, from working for Surenex, is very high. With a low price to receive the task also has a certain risk such as contract problems. Research agencies often take into consideration a customerââ¬â¢s financial capacity when they are establishing a price. In the future, when Surenex become a large hot company but YSL not allowed to increases the price because they are already sign the contract the price is fixed. At that time some problems will arise and indeed break the contract. On the other hand, YSL undertake this engagement with a low price may have effect on the service quality. In order to ensure the benefit of the company and base on the establish price, the company may reduce expense or c osts necessary. So the service quality of the company may decrease to a certain extent.

Airline marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Airline marketing - Essay Example There is a widely held misconception that marketing is about selling what is being produced. It is much more than that. Marketing is involved in deciding what should be produced. Marketing is involved in deciding what should be produced as well as how it should be sold. As such it is the lynchpin of any industry. It is all ââ¬â pervasive. It is important to recognize that everyone in the airline can contribute to the marketing process. The essence of marketing is to identify and satisfy customer needs; to be consumer-or- market oriented rather than production ââ¬â or supply oriented. If an airline concentrates on merely selling what is produced before identifying what customers want and are prepared to pay for, it is doomed to failure. The first step in marketing is to identify markets and market segments that can be served profitably. To do this one uses the whole range of market research methods, from desk based statistical analysis to survey of current and prospective user s of air services. The aim is to gain at the understanding of the needs of different market segments and also the degree to which such needs are not currently being satisfied. This leads on naturally to the production of traffic forecasts, which should be as detailed and segmented as possible. The second stage of marketing is to decide, in the light of the preceding market analyses, the air services that should be offered in the market and their product features both in the air and on the ground. This is product planning. ... The third stage is to plan and organize the selling of the products on the basis of a marketing plan. This involves setting up and operating sales and distribution outlets both airline-owned, such as sales office or telephone and internet sites, and indirect outlets involving a range of agents, sub-agents and on-line agencies. In order to attract potential customers, the marketing plan will also include a detailed program of advertising and promotion activities. Lastly, marketing is concerned with reviewing and monitoring both the degree to which the airline has been able consistently to meet the service standards and product features planned and customers responses to them. Such monitoring through weekly sales figures, customer surveys, analyses of complaints and other market research techniques should enable airlines to take short term corrective action, where possible, and also to make longer-term changes in their service and product features. We would be discussing here the marketing approach adopted by one of the best international airlines - Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines Ltd. (SIA), the national airline of Singapore and a major carrier in the Pacific region with routes to Europe and North America, is known for its unparalleled customer service as well as for its continuing efforts to upgrade its aircraft and technology. A long-established strategic seaport, Singapore is an important transit point for travel to other areas of the Far East. Even during times of severe recession in the airline industry, SIA has been the world's most consistently profitable airline and, unlike most, a virtual stranger to debt. The "Singapore Girl" flies to 90 cities in 40

Effective Leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1
Effective Leadership - Essay Example Brown and Duguid (2000) pointed out that an effective knowledge officer collects and leverages knowledge using information technology as a platform ââ¬â from the varied holders of knowledge and information. All organizations require people that can gather relevant knowledge from those who have it, reorganize it into formats that are usable and edit or update it as time goes by, so as to ensure that it offers the highest value. However, the organizations that are likely to fit into the wide description are those that foster knowledge management, encourage organizational learning and value knowledge as critical to their business processes (Al-Ghassani et al., 2004). This paper will explore the role of leadership in effective knowledge management, identifying the skills and the attributes required for knowledge management. ... organization is viewed as a critical aspect of organizational strategy; the situation where the organization understands the potential of the knowledge resource and formulates the strategies for its marketing. Thirdly, the organization should adopt the outlook of using learning and knowledge to support its core competencies and in the process of creating other competencies (Collins, 2001). Lastly, its management should entail the appointment, examination and rewarding of personnel on the basis of their participation in developing the knowledge required. The appointment of the knowledge leader, in an organization, is usually an indicator that the significance of knowledge and knowledge management, in determining the future success of the organization is acknowledged. Bass et al. (2003) acknowledge that the role of the leader or manager in taking the place of a knowledge leader is relatively immature, and there is no job specification to guide the process of recruiting the right leader . However, the effectiveness of their leadership skills, leadership outlook and the overall outlook about managing human resources offer the course for their leadership agenda (Hay Management Consultants, 2000). Further, irrespective of the lack of a clear definition of the roles of the knowledge leader, some of the roles that they are supposed to play, towards guaranteeing the effectiveness of knowledge management are discussed next (Andreas, 2005). These roles include promoting the knowledge agenda, fostering education and learning, laying the infrastructure, promoting best processes and practices, creating a culture of knowledge sharing and advocating for the practice (Andreas, 2005). Literature Review Leadership is fundamentally related to the relationships or the interactions between

Happy Family Life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Happy Family Life - Essay Example One simple rule that I have observed to be the most effective is when families eat dinner together. I remember several outdated TV commercials that portray a happy family on the dinner table while eating. The father would often come home from work tired and weary while the mother would burst out of the kitchen door and upon seeing off her husband, would gaily call ââ¬Å"Kids, your fatherââ¬â¢s here!â⬠The scene cuts then to the mother serving the dish she prepared for her family, to which her husband and children give a beaming look to each other before deciding to dig in and eat. The cutscene is particularly critical and it can be interpreted as the time to cook dinner for the mother is but just a few moments because she loves what she is doing. It is the smile that she sees in her husband and childrenââ¬â¢s faces that make it all worthwhile and thus the emphasis of the commercial is on the eager faces of the people she loves who are bound to get fed. Commercials like th ese are still successful in getting their point across millions of families worldwide and they are as attractive today as they were four decades ago. I recently went out with a girlfriend to the mall and when it was about past eleven, she was already seeming impatient and anxious, always checking her watch and her mobile. I never knew her to be a stickler for a time but about a quarter before twelve, she promptly asked if we could go home already as she is concerned that her family might get worried about her. I, of course, conceded to her wish and she verbally thanked me and gave me a hug. Later on, she would reveal to me the reason why she acted the way she did. She recalled that every evening at about eight oââ¬â¢clock, her parents would let her and her sister sit in the dining room and eat dinner. While eating, her parents would casually ask her and her sister how was school or how was their day in general.

What you learned about the larger field of art Essay
What you learned about the larger field of art - Essay Example Anthony Janson et al. (2010) did very interesting works in his book, the History of Art when he wrote this book. From the day I read it, I realized the value of art and appreciated it so much. I read every section of this great book that enters into the minds and hearts of its readers. Since history, artists have been keeping visual records. The neoclassic and romantic artists used the chisel and paintbrush to create an impression of the current vents of those times. These artists did not merely wait to be commissioned by rich families to do the work of art. Their passion in art gave birth to more artists. Art is rich in depth and inspires. The little fertility goddess that is mentioned in the book and the extravagant styles of Baroque and Rococco inspires a lot (Janson et al. 22). One of the most interesting works in the history of art is the picture of Adam and Eve. The picture tells the story of the Garden of Eden from the beginning when God put man on it. The story goes on to the time when man was expelled away from that garden. The story comes to the point where the Master ensures HIS place in history. The theme represented in the book captures the rise and fall of great and women in the Middle Ages. The book is copiously illustrated and provides a schema from which varying periods of art can be learnt. It provides useful information that can be used for the development of various scholarly researches on art. The History of Art captures Western in most works that have been included in it. Thus, it had some bias towards other works of art from different countries (Janson et al. 45). Towards the end, the book is rather apologetic and gives a halfhearted nod to Asian Art. I have been interested in art and I found this book useful for my development in the art industry more than I thought. I read the book from cover to cover and became interested in all the

Television as a live medium Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Television as a live medium - Assignment Example Bourdon cited several examples to demonstrate this. There is the case of the live sports commentary. The authors explained that the delivery involves specific phonetic features as well as the unmistakable rhythm and prosody that came as the event unfolds (543). It was stressed that such live commentary could be recorded earlier in a previously completed game or sporting event. But television programs do not operate in vacuums. The audience knows - besides the actual material being viewed - the background information about what they are watching. For example, the schedule of basketball games are published and known to the viewers. These types of information augment the audienceââ¬â¢s ability to determine whether a television exhibition is live or not. The voice or the verbal aspect of live television also works in tandem with the visual content being presented. A voice complements the body language of television mediators such as reporters talking to the news anchor. During a news report when a story is being beamed as it happens and the reporter and the anchor are talking about it, the audio reveals the liveness by confirming the nuances (and problems) present in a conversation transpiring where on is talking back from a remote area. The delay in the answers, the need to repeat details and even some technical glitches such as static sounds - they collectively articulate to the audience that the report is transpiring live. Bourdon also pointed out the impromptu changes that occur before the viewersââ¬â¢ eyes and how the voice of television mediators highlights the liveness of the program by confirming them for the sake of the audience. Say, after an advertising break and a new resource person joins a live talk show, the host introduces him or her. It shows a break in sequence or a perfectly logical unfolding of the program, which underpins the contrived pre-produced television materials. To put this in context, one should remember that modern viewers are f amiliar with live television and could often spot if a program is not. An important part in this discernment is the sound. It is difficult to manipulate and it provides the clue if a material is contrived or pre-produced. It complements the visual messages to articulate ââ¬Å"livenessâ⬠. Question 2: Why Pay attention, as Sterne urges, to the ââ¬Å"physical life of the mediumâ⬠of television? The physical ââ¬Å"stuffâ⬠of television is important, according to Sterne, because it is critical in the way the medium functions or rather in the way ââ¬Å"televisualâ⬠relationships are organized (504). He cited that television infrastructure ââ¬Å"reify social relationships - giving relations a degree of density, inflexibility or objectivity that they would not have without an abstracted principle and mechanism of repetitionâ⬠(504). The problem being addressed by this position is that television infrastructure and its physical life remains mystified or relegate d in the historical background mainly because they are not accorded the right degree of interest and emphasis. The argument is that an understanding of the mediumââ¬â¢s physical life will provide insights in the sheer power of televisionââ¬â¢s capability and, therefore, an appreciation and recognition of its role in social, cultural, political and economic spheres. Sterne ultimately underscored that the American television - when approached through an understanding

Principles of Economics Gross Domestic Product Essay
Principles of Economics Gross Domestic Product - Essay Example During the base year nominal and real GDP are equal. Therefore real GDP reflects both prices and quantities of goods and services produced by an economy, whereas nominal GDP reflects the produced quantities only. GDP does not reflect accurately the nation's productivity. There are products that GDP excludes, because it is difficult to measure them. For one thing, GDP includes all items produced and sold legally in the market. This means that products that are produced and sold illegally cannot be traced and measured by the GDP. Additionally, GDP does not include products and services that are actually produced by households but never enter the market. These are, for example, home grown fruit or vegetables that are used within the households that cultivate them. Also, GDP excludes other immeasurable variables like the quality of the environment or leisure time and does not reflect the distribution of income within an economy.

Engineering Management - Coursework Example Management style has an important role to play as appropriate management style can help employees perform their tasks efficiently and achieve their targets, meet organizational goals, keep the employees motivated and help organization make efficient decisions (Bryman, 1993). In Apple the decisions are imposed, whereas in Google the management has given employees to the option to select the project they would like to work on and with whom they would like to work with thus these two management styles have been contrasting but both have been successful. 20% of the employees working time have been allocated by Google to come up with their own software concepts and ideas whereas all kinds of thinking and planning is done at the top level at Apple (McInerney, 2011).
